Legal Action Comics
Born in Philadelphia, R. Crumb is the author of numerous comics and one of the pioneers of underground comics. His books include Kafka, The Complete Crumb Comics (17 volumes), The R. Crumb Sketchbook (10 volumes), R. Crumb Draw the Blues, The Book of Mr. Natural, The Book of Genesis Illustrated by R. Crumb and many others. He lives with his wife, artist Aline Kominsky-Crumb, in southern France. I like funny comics, but I also like comics that are moving, emotional and poetic.
Preferably a mixture of both. I was born in the fishing village of Gloucester, Massachusetts, a town full of fishermen and seascape painters. My grandparents were artists, they taught me how to use ink pencils and oil paint. My grandfather showed me a lot of old comics he had saved, the old ones, Roy Crane, Lionel Feininger, Winsor McKay. When I was in college, I discovered R. Crumb and S. Clay Wilson. I drew a lot of perverse comics until the day I discovered George Herriman, the grandfather of American comics. The real master. People often ask me if comics are art. Either way, it doesn`t matter what you call them, but if you`re immersed in a collection of Herriman Sundays, you understand what they`re getting at.
Legal Action Comics is edited by Danny Hellman, who served as curator of the annual Max Fish Cartoon Show, a pivotal event in the New York City cartoon community, for more than a decade. Hellman, an established cartoonist and editorial illustrator whose work has been published in various publications (including; Time, Sports Illustrated, The Wall Street Journal, Newsweek, New York Press and The Nation), conceived the project as a fundraiser for its legal defense fund. With its engaging blend of different cartoon styles and extravagant humor, Legal Action Comics continues the tradition of groundbreaking underground comics milestones like Zap Comics and Raw.
